Purpose

This Design Engineer role involves bridging design and production, creating and optimizing innovative product designs for manufacturability, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring compliance with internal and industry standards.

This role works in collaboration with other integrated project team (IPT) members to produce, review and mature high quality technical documentation, including CAD models, drawings, PMI’s, DFMEA’s, bills of material, and engineering specifications.

The role’s expertise in CAD, GD&T, and PLM systems ensures that engineering design intent is implemented in a manner that is accurate, functional, and manufacturable, meeting customer expectations and Divergent’s standards for quality and consistency.

The Role

  • Challenge existing design requirements and define new design standards for product functions and features, based on regulations, DFM/DFAM, and product attributes.
  • Act as SME for PLM, GD&T, CAD-design best practices and lesson learned.
  • Ensure all designs meet required engineering, manufacturability, and industry standards, addressing issues during the release phase.
  • Accountable and responsible for protecting the quality of the final engineering products (released designs, CAD, Drawings, & PMI), ensuring the production team receives data that meets quality and usability standards.
  • Check technical documentation (incl. drawings, PMI, BOM’s, DFMEA, specs, etc.) before being released into PLM, enforcing compliance to internal SOP and guidelines.
  • Analyze drawings, models, and documentation for GD&T accuracy, completeness, manufacturability, assemble-ability and inspectability.
  • Support active programs by creating and managing design engineering data, as requested by the IPT.
  • Manage ongoing production NCR’s and dispositions, collaborating with ME’s and RE’s.
  • Support the implementation of ECR/ECO’s for production parts, as required or needed.
  • Work cross-functionally to implement cost reduction, methods and product improvements, and support prototype and production build activities.
  • Identify opportunities for standardization, automation, and process improvement in GD&T and PMI practices.
  • Support the training of new personnel for the area of competence.
  • Maintain and organize design documentation and reference material, ensuring all revisions and updates are properly documented, stored, and disseminated to the broader team.

Basic Qualifications

  • Ability to lawfully access information and technology that is subject to US export controls.
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Aerospace or automotive design background.
  • 2+ years of CAD experience creating detailed models.
  • 2+ years of PLM/PDM experience.
  • Solid understanding of common manufacturing and assembly methods, GD&T, and tolerance/stack-up analysis.
  • Experience with PMI, DFMEA, control plans, PPAP and APQP.
  • Experience with ASME Y14.100, Y14.5, Y14.41.
  • Self-motivated with strong multi-tasking, organizational, communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work well in an integrated team including daily interactions with technicians, engineers, and managers.
  • Attention to detail and record keeping.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 2+ years of Siemens NX experience.
  • 2+ years of Teamcenter experience.
  • Experience interfacing with engineering, manufacturing and quality teams to understand system designs and the associated constraints.
  • Experience in CMM programming in a CNC machine shop (Mills, Lathes & EDM).
