1 in 4 people in the US have a treatable mental health condition, but most providers don't accept insurance, making therapy too expensive for most people. Headway’s mission is to fix this by building a new mental healthcare system everyone can access. We started by solving the biggest barrier to care: insurance. The admin work - credentialing, claims, payment reconciliation - is a nightmare. We've automated that.

But we're going further. Over 90,000 providers across all 50 states run their practice on our software, serving over 2.6 million patients. We are building the best tools for therapists to run their entire practice, reimagining the experience of finding a therapist, and investing in the platform foundations to enable this at scale, and building much of it with AI. We aren't just a billing layer; we are becoming the platform where care actually happens.

We're a Series D company with $325M+ in funding (a16z, Accel, Spark Capital, etc.), looking for exceptional people to help us achieve this mission. We want your time here to be the most meaningful experience of your career. Join us, and help change mental healthcare for the better.

About The Role

As Principal, Clinical Product at Headway, you’ll embed behavioral health expertise into the design, governance, and evolution of our digital platform. You will ensure our products are clinically sound, ethically designed, compliant with evolving standards, and aligned with best practices in patient safety and quality.

You will operate at the intersection of clinical care, AI innovation, and product strategy translating complex behavioral health workflows into scalable digital solutions that empower over 90,000 clinicians and millions of patients.

This role requires strong collaboration, leadership skills, clear communication, and the ability to execute both independently and within cross-functional teams. Your work will directly support growing our provider network, connecting more patients to care, and improving patient outcomes.

This role is for a licensed psychiatrist or psychologist who has partnered closely with product and engineering teams to build AI-enabled healthcare tools, and who wants to shape how clinical quality shows up in products at a national scale.

You Will

Embed with product teams on our highest-priority initiatives so clinical input shapes the work from problem definition through launch, rather than arriving as a review gate at the end

Translate complex clinical workflows into requirements engineers and designers can build against

Bring clinical judgment to AI-enabled features, helping teams define what safe, useful, clinically appropriate behavior looks like, and how to evaluate it

Help define what clinical quality, patient safety, and good outcomes look like on our platform, and make them measurable

Monitor how our products perform across provider adoption, patient experience, and clinical quality, using both data and direct input from clinicians and patients

Partner with Data and Analytics to turn ambiguous questions into insight that changes product decisions

Align product, design, data, and engineering on clinical tradeoffs and keep decisions moving

You’d Be a Great Fit If You Have

An active, unrestricted license as a psychologist (PhD/PsyD) or psychiatrist (MD/DO) with 6+ years of post-graduate clinical experience

Direct experience partnering with product and engineering teams to build AI-enabled healthcare tools

Experience with AI governance, risk frameworks, or clinical safety standards for AI

Experience at a high-growth startup or tech company

Strong analytical instincts: you can define a metric, defend it, and use data to change a decision

Clear communication: you can explain clinical concepts simply to teams without healthcare backgrounds, and influence decisions without formal authority

Nice to have

Background in behavioral health quality or patient safety programs

Hands-on work with claims data, outcomes measurement, or measurement-informed care

Experience presenting to health plan or health system leadership, or at industry conferences
