Accountabilities:

  • Design, develop, and continuously improve Backend for Frontend (BFF) services using Kotlin, aggregating and orchestrating data from multiple microservices to support web and mobile applications.
  • Define and maintain API contracts using REST and/or GraphQL in collaboration with frontend and mobile teams, ensuring appropriate versioning, compatibility, and consistency.
  • Optimize application performance and latency through Kotlin coroutines, parallel processing, caching, pagination, and efficient communication between services.
  • Implement resilience patterns, including circuit breakers, retries, timeouts, and fallback mechanisms, to improve the reliability of downstream service integrations.
  • Ensure secure API development by implementing authentication, authorization, and appropriate data protection practices using technologies such as OAuth2, OpenID Connect (OIDC), and JWT.
  • Participate in architectural decisions, evaluate technical trade-offs, document design choices, and promote scalable, maintainable software solutions.
  • Conduct code reviews and establish engineering best practices that strengthen code quality, test coverage, performance, and long-term maintainability.
  • Develop and maintain automated tests across different application layers to validate functionality, integration, reliability, and system behavior.
  • Monitor application health and performance using observability tools, investigate production incidents, and contribute to effective troubleshooting and resolution.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align backend architecture and API behavior with product requirements and customer needs.
  • Support the professional development of junior and mid-level developers through mentoring, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing.
  • Contribute to continuous improvements in development workflows, deployment practices, system reliability, and engineering standards.

Requirements

  • Extensive hands-on experience developing backend applications with Kotlin, including practical knowledge of coroutines and Flow.
  • Proven experience building and maintaining BFF services or API aggregation and orchestration layers in production environments.
  • Strong proficiency with Spring Boot, with Spring WebFlux experience considered an advantage, or practical experience with Ktor.
  • Solid understanding of microservices architecture and service integration using REST, gRPC, and/or GraphQL.
  • Experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL, as well as caching technologies such as Redis.
  • Experience designing and implementing automated tests using tools such as JUnit 5, MockK, and Testcontainers.
  • Practical experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and Docker-based development and deployment workflows.
  • Strong understanding of API security practices, authentication and authorization mechanisms, and data protection principles, including Brazil's General Data Protection Law (LGPD).
  • Ability to make sound technical decisions independently, assess risks, and take ownership of deliverables and their impact in production.
  • Strong architectural reasoning skills, including the ability to explain technical decisions, evaluate trade-offs, and balance performance, security, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with product, frontend, mobile, and business teams.
  • A proactive, collaborative mindset and willingness to mentor colleagues, share expertise, and contribute to continuous improvement.

Nice to have

  • Experience with messaging technologies such as Apache Kafka or RabbitMQ and event-driven architecture.
  • Familiarity with GraphQL implementations and tools such as Apollo or Netflix DGS, as well as API Gateway solutions.
  • Experience with Kubernetes and cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Knowledge of observability and monitoring tools, including Grafana, Prometheus, Datadog, or the ELK Stack.
  • Experience working in financial services or other business-critical environments where reliability, security, and performance are essential.
