2027 - Internship, Surveillance

Programmes offered: Final-year internship, penultimate-year internship

Location: London

Programme duration: 3–6 months or 12-month industrial placement, starting in 2027

Who qualifies: Penultimate or final-year students completing a bachelor’s or master’s degree

Qube Research & Technologies (QRT) is a global quantitative and systematic investment manager operating across liquid asset classes and markets worldwide. Our approach to investing is scientific: we bring together data, research, technology and trading expertise to develop and run systematic strategies.

Central functions underpin QRT’s global investment business, providing the expertise, infrastructure and operational support essential to our research, trading and technology teams. Working in close partnership with colleagues across the firm, these teams manage core business processes, maintain effective controls and ensure the business has the resources and support it needs to operate efficiently. Their work helps QRT navigate the demands of a complex global organisation, meet its obligations and build the foundations for continued growth.

Our internships are designed to give students meaningful experience of that work. You’ll join a team, contribute to real projects and learn from engineers, researchers and traders working on live problems. The environment is technical, collaborative and demanding, with plenty of scope to ask questions, test ideas and take ownership. Strong performance during the internship may lead to consideration for a full-time graduate role.

Your future role at QRT

Throughout the recruitment process, we will work to align your skills, interests, and potential with the teams where you can make the greatest impact.

As a Surveillance Intern, you will join QRT’s Compliance department in London and gain practical experience monitoring trading activity across global markets. You will work closely with Compliance Advisory, Risk, Trading and Technology teams to help identify potential market abuse or disorderly trading, improve surveillance processes and support QRT’s regulatory obligations.

You may contribute to activities including:

  • Reviewing trade surveillance alerts and helping investigate unusual or potentially suspicious trading activity.
  • Developing an understanding of market-abuse typologies, including spoofing, layering and insider dealing.
  • Analysing trading activity across multiple asset classes, markets and jurisdictions.
  • Helping integrate new markets, products, and data sources into the surveillance framework.
  • Working with technology and data teams to improve monitoring tools and surveillance processes.

Your current skillset

Eligibility – Penultimate or final year students pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in a STEM discipline, on track for a 2:1 or above.

Technical Skills – Examples of relevant experience include:

  • Interest in financial markets and electronic trading, and basic knowledge of different asset classes such as equities, derivatives, fixed income and cryptocurrencies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate data, identify patterns and reach well-reasoned conclusions.
  • Experience with Python or SQL and familiarity with data analysis, automation or the use of emerging coding and AI-assisted programming applications.
  • Good communication skills and writing skills

Examples of the projects you may work on include:

  • Analysing order and trade data to identify patterns that may indicate suspicious or disorderly trading, supporting the investigation and documentation of daily surveillance alerts.
  • Analysis of flagged electronic or voice communications
  • Testing and calibration of surveillance alerts, thresholds and detection logic.
  • Building data-analysis or automation tools to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of surveillance reviews, including the design and development of data quality controls.
  • Working with Compliance, Trading, Risk and Technology colleagues to understand trading behaviour and resolve data or surveillance issues.
