The Team
Application Platform Engineering owns what every product team at impact.com builds on: shared libraries, service templates and engineering standards. Our goal is to build the paved road, where the right way to build a service is also the easiest, and compliant by default.
You'll join a small but growing team, reporting directly to our Senior Director of Engineering and working with a dedicated product manager, early enough to shape what we build and how we work.
Your Role at impact.com
Your customers are other engineers, and your reach is all of engineering. What you build runs inside every new service, so a good decision pays off many times over, and a security patch lands once and reaches everyone. Where five teams would each solve the same problem differently, you give it one owner and one good implementation.
This is a hands-on role: most of your time goes into writing and shipping code, with the rest spent working with teams on discovery and adoption. You'll talk to teams to find out where they're losing days, decide which problems are worth solving once for everyone, build the solution, and see it through to adoption. Teams adopt our solutions because they're the best option and we treat them like internal products with a roadmap, versioned releases, and good documentation.
What You'll Do
- Build and own shared components such as service scaffolding, logging, observability and authentication, shipped as libraries, SDKs, shared services and agentic tooling (MCP servers, agents, skills and plugins)
- Find problems by working directly with product teams and decide what's worth solving centrally, using AI to confirm impact and scope in repositories you don't own
- Solve the problems that only show up at platform scale: keeping APIs compatible for consumers you don't control, and moving live services onto new foundations without downtime
- Own adoption end to end, including rollout plans, migration tooling, upgrade guides, and hands-on support. Measure adoption and reliability and report them honestly
- Turn our engineering blueprints into code, such as CI/CD policy checks in GitHub Actions, template governance, and dependency policy, so following best practice is the default
- Shape how services get built at impact.com, through design reviews, technical proposals, and the example your code sets
What You Have
- Senior-level experience (typically 5+ years) building production applications with Java and Spring
- A track record of building software other engineers depend on, such as APIs, SDKs, shared libraries and platform services
- Good judgement about platform design: which abstractions are worth having, when a default should be opinionated, and where to leave room for teams to extend it
- Experience driving change across team boundaries, including the persuasion and support it takes to land a migration
- Disciplined use of AI tooling: you direct it through planning, implementation and validation, and you can tell when its output is wrong. You also understand how agentic tooling such as MCP servers, agents, skills and plugins work
- Clear technical writing: documentation people can follow and design proposals that lead to decisions
