Role Overview

As a Manager II, Platform Engineering, you oversee the teams that build and operate the compute platform every Housecall Pro engineering team relies on, driving the delivery of reliable, scalable, and cost-efficient infrastructure that aligns with business objectives. You focus on both tactical execution and strategic direction, ensuring that operational practices are efficient, collaborative, and effective.

You work cross-functionally with engineering teams, security, and finance to translate their needs into platform capabilities, balancing innovation with the need to keep our production systems stable, secure, and within budget. Additionally, you play a key role in mentoring and developing engineering talent within your teams, fostering a culture of accountability, technical excellence, and continuous improvement. Our team is passionate, empathetic, hard working, and above all else focused on improving the lives of our service professionals (our Pros). Their success is our success.

What you do each day:

  • Lead and manage a team of platform engineers, ensuring timely delivery of platform projects, operational outcomes, and team performance through regular feedback and coaching
  • Collaborate with engineering teams and cross-functional stakeholders to define requirements, prioritize work, and align platform initiatives with business objectives
  • Ensure best practices in infrastructure development, including code reviews, testing, infrastructure as code, and safe, progressive rollouts
  • Mentor and develop engineers, fostering personal and technical growth, accountability, and continuous improvement
  • Monitor team progress, remove roadblocks, and balance support requests, maintenance, and roadmap priorities to meet commitments
  • Oversee the technical design and architecture of the compute platform, including container orchestration, autoscaling, and deployment tooling
  • Own platform reliability, including service level objectives, monitoring, alerting, incident response, blameless postmortems, and follow-up actions
  • Maintain sustainable on-call rotations and ensure platform security through regular upgrades, patching, and security guardrails
  • Plan capacity ahead of business growth and manage cloud costs in collaboration with finance on budgeting and forecasting
  • Identify opportunities to improve operational processes, tools, and practices by staying current with industry trends and technologies

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in infrastructure, platform, or site reliability engineering
  • 4+ years in a people leadership or management role
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent work experience
  • Strong knowledge of software development methodologies, tools, and processes (i.e., Agile, Scrum, Kanban)

  • Deep experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS), including compute, networking, and identity and access management
