KMBC 9, the ABC affiliate in Kansas City, is looking for a Sports Anchor/Reporter who knows that a great sports story is about more than the final score. We're looking for someone who can make sports compelling for everyone—from the devoted fan who follows every game to the casual viewer who simply loves a great story.

Kansas City is a passionate sports town, and we want someone who can capture that passion through strong reporting, memorable storytelling and engaging live coverage. You'll cover major sporting events, develop original stories, and find the people and moments that make sports meaningful beyond the field of play. This high-profile, hands-on position requires significant travel. You'll also help produce and co-host “Sports Sunday”, our weekly sports program airing Sundays at 10:30 p.m.

We're looking for someone who brings ideas to the table, takes ownership of coverage, and knows how to make a live shot memorable—not simply deliver a report from a predictable location.

Responsibilities

  • Anchor and report sports coverage for KMBC 9’s newscasts and digital platforms.
  • Help produce and co-host Sports Sunday, including developing story ideas, planning segments, preparing interviews and contributing to the show’s editorial direction.
  • Develop original, enterprise sports stories that go beyond scores, statistics and highlights.
  • Tell compelling stories that resonate with casual sports viewers as well as dedicated fans, finding human interest, emotion, stakes and broader significance behind the competition.
  • Deliver creative, engaging live reports that make effective use of location, access, visuals and the atmosphere surrounding major events.
  • Travel extensively to cover major sporting events, teams and stories, including breaking news, championship events and other high-profile assignments.
  • Build and maintain relationships with athletes, coaches, organizations and other sources to develop exclusive stories and break news.
  • Collaborate with producers, photographers and newsroom leadership to plan distinctive, high-impact coverage.
  • Write, shoot, edit and produce content for television, streaming, digital and social platforms.
  • Represent KMBC 9 professionally at community and station events.
  • Manage multiple assignments and deadlines while maintaining accuracy, fairness and strong journalistic standards.

Qualifications

  • At least two years of sports anchoring experience preferred.
  • At least two years of television reporting experience preferred.
  • Exceptional storytelling skills, with demonstrated ability to make sports interesting and accessible to viewers who may not closely follow teams, leagues or athletes.
  • Strong live reporting skills, including examples of creative, visually compelling coverage from sporting events and other major news situations.
  • Confident, conversational on-air presentation and the ability to ad-lib effectively.
  • Experience developing original stories, securing interviews and building reliable sources.
  • Strong writing, editorial judgment and ability to work collaboratively under deadline pressure.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently and work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays and extended assignments.
  • Ability to use field production equipment, mobile transmission technology and contemporary newsroom tools.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Commitment to journalistic integrity, accuracy and ethical reporting.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Related military experience will be considered.

What We Want to See

Your reel should demonstrate more than your ability to anchor a sportscast. We’re especially interested in examples of:

  • Storytelling with broad appeal: Stories that connect with viewers who aren’t necessarily sports fans.
  • Creative live reporting: Live shots that demonstrate originality, strong visual thinking, resourcefulness and an ability to capture the excitement or significance of a moment.
  • Major-event coverage: Reporting that shows how you approach important sporting events, including the stories beyond the competition itself.
