Discord has a highly engaged community of millions of daily active users who use the platform for many different reasons, but there’s one thing that nearly everyone does: play video games. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming, and we are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to hang out before, during, and after playing games.

Discord is seeking a Senior HR Manager, Europe to serve as the company's first internal HR/People hire in Europe, based in Amsterdam. This role supports employees across Amsterdam (Netherlands) and Lisbon (Portugal), combining hands-on business partnering with ownership of Discord's regional HR foundation. This role requires deep Dutch employment expertise, experience supporting employees across European jurisdictions, and the ability to translate Discord's global People programs into practices that work for European teams.

This is a 12-month fixed-term contract with the potential to extend for additional fixed terms or indefinitely.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Own manager coaching, performance management, talent processes, org changes, and employee relations for Amsterdam and Lisbon employees, serving as the primary internal HR point of contact and escalation point for both locations
  • Adapt, localize, or build new versions of Discord's global HR processes, programs, and governance to determine what applies as-is, what needs to change, and where European employment law or working norms require a genuinely different approach
  • Own regional compliance requirements such as pay transparency reporting and immigration/work authorization for non-EU hires
  • Serve as the primary internal HR presence for Amsterdam and Lisbon, leveraging Discord's centralized People functions (Total Rewards, Recruiting, Talent Programs, etc.) and external specialists (Immigration, Local Counsel) where appropriate
  • Develop and execute the regional People strategy as Discord’s European workforce and operating model evolve

What You Should Have

  • 8+ years of HR experience, with strong, current Dutch employment practices expertise such as employee representation structures (PVT/OR as headcount requires), Dutch sick leave and reintegration law, pension schemes, CAO where applicable
  • Experience supporting employees across more than one European jurisdiction and comfort operating outside an established single-country HR framework.
  • Working knowledge of Portuguese employment practices is required, such as the statutory salary structure (14 payments per year), notice periods, and probation norms, together with the ability to identify when specialist local advice is needed.
  • Strong HRBP/business-partnering capability, including manager coaching, performance management, organizational design, and employee relations; ability to translate business needs into people strategy and build trust and influence with leaders at all levels
  • Experience working in a US-headquartered/global tech company, with demonstrated ability to translate US/global HR practices into a European context
  • Experience standing up HR in a new country or entity, and adapting and localizing existing HR programs for a new market, including building new local-specific processes or policies where an existing program doesn't fit local needs
  • Comfort operating with significant autonomy and no in-region HR peer, while partnering closely with Discord’s centralized People functions and external specialists
  • Ability to travel to Lisbon periodically (up to one week per month during initial ramp-up, tapering to shorter monthly visits thereafter) to support in-person employee relations, onboarding, and local leadership partnership
  • Fluent English required; professional Dutch proficiency required; Portuguese proficiency preferred.
